DOH logs 275 rabies cases
MANILA, Philippines — With those infected with rabies likely to die if not treated early, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday warned the public, especially pet owners, against the risks of rabies.
“Rabies infection is a very serious disease. It has 100 percent fatality rate kapag kumpirmado ang rabies at nakagat ka sa mga lugar na kritikal,” DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said at a press briefing on Tuesday.
The DOH recorded 275 rabies cases nationwide since January. The figure is higher by 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
Vergeire said Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Soccsksargen and Davao Region registered the most number of rabies cases.
To avoid contracting the deadly disease, Vergeire advised the public to register their pets with the local government units and have them vaccinated against rabies.
She said having domesticated animals vaccinated lessens the risk of pet owners getting infected with rabies.
Vergeire said those who have been bitten by pets or stray animals should thoroughly wash the wound area with soap and water.
They must also seek immediate consultation at the nearest health center where free anti-rabies shots are provided by the government.
