BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The number of residents of Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental who evacuated their homes increased to 18,236 as clashes between New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and soldiers continued yesterday.
Provincial social welfare and development officer Merle Garcia said the affected residents are from Barangays Carabalan, Cabadiangan and Poblacion 3.
Gunfights between soldiers belonging to the 94th Infantry Battalion and NPA guerrillas started on Oct. 6.
NPA leader Romeo Nanta and Cpls. Rex Verde and Christian Drilon were killed and six other soldiers were wounded in the skirmishes.
Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the displaced residents are not yet allowed to return to their respective communities.
He said he instructed his commanders to identify the areas where clearing operations have been completed to ensure the safe return of affected residents.
Pasaporte said the displaced residents are staying in 18 evacuation centers.
The evacuees are being taken care of by the city government with the assistance of the provincial and regional social welfare and development offices.
A team of doctors and nurses from the provincial health office was dispatched to the evacuation centers.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson reiterated the assurance of military officials that the government is in control of the situation.
“We can soon expect a green light in certain areas for evacuees to go back home,” Lacson said.
