MANILA, Philippines — A plebiscite to ratify the merger of 28 barangays into three and rename another in Ormoc City in Leyte will be held today.
Commission on Elections Chairman George Garcia said the Comelec is all set for the plebiscite to be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Garcia will oversee the plebiscite along with Commissioners Socorro Inting and Rey Bulay.
Comelec records show that 10,209 registered voters in Barangays 1 to 29 will troop to 75 precincts in a single voting center.
Garcia said the counting of votes and proclamation of results would be conducted immediately after the voting.
The plebiscite will ratify the merger of Barangays 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23 and 27, to be known as Barangay South; Barangays 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 25 and 28 as Barangay East, and Barangays 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24 and 26 as Barangay West.
Barangay 29 will be renamed Barangay North.
The merger and renaming of barangays are provided under Ordinance No. 52 approved by the city council on January 2021.
Ormoc is currently composed of 110 barangays.
