MANILA, Philippines — Three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with soldiers in Sitio Lagmak, Barangay Pagsangahan in General Nakar, Quezon on Tuesday.

Government troopers led by 1st Lt. Geno Solanggo clashed with an undetermined number of NPA guerrillas under the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya Narciso of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee.

Two M16 rifles, an R4 carbine and an M203 grenade launcher were recovered from the fatalities.

Brig. Gen. Cerilo Balaoro Jr., 202nd Infantry Brigade commander, said soldiers were conducting focused military operations amid complaints that NPA rebels were extorting food and other supplies from residents when the clash occurred.

In Nueva Ecija, Brig. Gen. Cezar Pasiwen, Central Luzon police director, said two NPA rebels surrendered while 15 members of the Liga ng Manggagawang Bukid under the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas withdrew their support for the communist movement.

Pasiwen said the surrenderees turned over a hand grenade, a caliber .38 revolver, a rifle grenade and assorted medicine. – Ed Amoroso, Ric Sapnu
