Lacuna lights Filipino-Chinese friendship arch in Binondo
MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna lauded the friendly ties between the Filipino and Chinese community as she attended the opening of the “Mooncake Festival” in Binondo on Friday night.
Lacuna led the lighting of the rehabilitated Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The friendship arch, adorned with 800 bulbs, is considered “the world’s largest Chinatown Arch, which is 63.8 feet high and 74 feet wide,” according to the Manila city government’s public information office.
The arch also showcases the fusion of modern and traditional designs between pagodas.
Lacuna welcomed the migrant and Filipino-Chinese community in Manila and urged them to invest in the city.
“This arch serves as a testament of the Filipino-Chinese friendship, unity and harmony. Let us revive the majestic Manila Chinatown,” she said.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is “the second most important festival celebrated by the Chinese, next to the Chinese New Year because it celebrates good harvest and encourages harvest-giving light for another good harvest the following year,” according to the city government.
