EPD denies torture of teen detainee
MANILA, Philippines — There is no truth to the allegations of a detainee that he is being tortured by policemen at the Pasig City police station, an official said yesterday.
Eastern Police District (EPD) director Col. Wilson Asueta denied the claims of torture at the hands of lawmen by Jethron David, 19.
David, in a handwritten letter, asked his mother to do everything to get him out of jail. He alleged that police officers constantly beat him and hit his feet with sticks to make him plead guilty since he was arrested in Barangay Malinao on Sept. 5.
David was apprehended based on a warrant of arrest issued by court in Makati City for robbery and illegal possession, manufacture and acquisition of firearms, ammunition or explosives.
Asueta said when he learned of David’s allegations, he immediately ordered an investigation.
However, the result of the initial probe showed there were no signs of torture on David’s body.
“As per report to me, no sign of torture but puno ng tattoo ang katawan (his body was full of tattoos),” Asueta said in a text message to The STAR.
Even if David wanted out, Asueta said he could not be released from detention as the court refused to grant bail.
