MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday launched its “libreng sakay” program, which would send seven buses and two military trucks to transport commuters along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City for free.

The vehicles would travel from the area of Doña Carmen to Welcome Rotonda, according to acting MMDA Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III.

The free rides would be available from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Monday to Friday.

The fleet would be able to transport an average of 500 to 600 passengers a day, he said.

The MMDA plans to implement the free ride program until December, he added.

He and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte attended the ceremonial dispatch of the “libreng sakay,” wherein they also distributed alcohol spray bottles to passengers.

Belmonte thanked the MMDA for its initiative of easing the burden of passengers, especially students who commute on their way to school.

“I am very happy that transportation agencies are working hand in hand with the local government in easing the burden of the commuting public,” she said.
