Barbers seeks revival of death penalty
MANILA, Philippines — Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers is once again pushing for the restoration of the death penalty as a deterrent against heinous crimes.
Barbers, who chairs the House committee on dangerous drugs, wants plunder to be included in the list of heinous crimes punishable by death.
“I filed a measure seeking the reimposition of the death penalty for heinous crimes, including plunder, as provided in Republic Act 7659,” Barbers told OneNews’ “The Chiefs” on Tuesday night.
On July 7, Barbers filed House Bill 1543 seeking the revival of capital punishment, citing the “alarming increase in crimes in our country.”
“It aims to restore order and punish criminals. The death penalty also serves as a retribution for the victims and their families,” the bill’s explanatory note read.
