Lumad teacher held for murder
MANILA, Philippines — A former teacher of a school for lumads was arrested in Tandag, Surigao del Sur on Sunday.
Gary Campos, 30, former teacher of the Tribal Pilipino Program of Surigao del Sur, was apprehended in the city plaza in Barangay Bongtud at around 1:47 p.m.
Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said Campos has a pending arrest warrant issued by Bayugan City Regional Trial Court Branch 10 Judge Fernando Fudalan Jr., and is ranked 10th among the most wanted fugitives in Tandag.
“We ensure that due process is observed in serving the warrant of arrest to the subject,” Danao said in a statement.
Human rights group Karapatan condemned Campos’ arrest.
Karapatan claimed Campos was on his way to a review center to prepare for the upcoming licensure examination for teachers when he was arrested.
“He said he was calling from the police station in Butuan that he was arrested earlier that day and was presented with a warrant of arrest for a trumped-up case,” Karapatan said.
