Guihulngan cop chief dies in road mishap

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The police chief of Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental died while the provincial police director and two others were injured when their motorcycles collided with a dump truck along the highway in Sitio Buli in Barangay Rizal in San Carlos, Negros Occidental on Friday.

Lt. Col. Ruben Verbo, 44, was declared dead on arrival at the San Carlos City Hospital.

Initial investigation showed the brake of the 10-wheeler dump truck driven by Wenny Boy Nagor malfunctioned and hit four motorcycles in the opposite lane. The truck was loaded with gravel.

Negros Oriental police director Col. Germano Mallari and Edwardo Aceñas and Verbo’s backrider Richie Dayday, were injured.

Lt. Roby Aurita, San Carlos City deputy police chief, said the victims were on their way to Camp Alfredo Montelibano Sr. in this city for a meeting on barangayanihan activity when the accident occurred.

Nagor was arrested.

In Lucena City, Carl Regonay, 22, died when his motorcycle rammed a concrete pole along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Lower Dupay yesterday.

His backriders Christian Torio, 24, and Jonathan Torio, 20, were injured and brought to the Quezon Medical Center for treatment.
