Makati suspends elevator repairs at Burgundy Tower

Neil Jayson Servallos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati government has suspended elevator repair works at the Burgundy Corporate Tower where two workers died after an elevator they were fixing collapsed on Friday.

Mayor Abby Binay ordered the Office of the Building Official to coordinate with police in investigating the incident, Don Michael Camiña, spokesman for the local government, said.

“The city government condoles with the families of the elevator installers who died in the incident,” Camiña said.

He said all elevator repairs in the building have been suspended upon the contractor’s full compliance with safety protocols.

According to Camiña, the managements of Burgundy Corporate Tower, Otis Philippines and its contractor, DLC Electron Mechanical Engineering Service, are cooperating in the probe.

Manuel Linayao and Rey Miguel Gilera died when an elevator fell from the building’s 38th floor and hit the victims who were fixing an elevator on the sixth floor, before crashing into the basement.

“The local government reiterates its commitment to the safety of all Makatizens, including the clients and employees of businesses in the city. Rest assured that we will continue to enforce safety building protocols to prevent a similar tragedy,” Camiña said.
