6 dead as ambulance hits truck in Zamboanga del Norte

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A hauler truck collided with an ambulance along the highway in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte on Wednesday, leaving six persons dead and seven others wounded.

The fatalities were identified as ambulance driver Joseph Lopena, truck driver Mario Macatual and ambulance passengers Analisa Maribojoc, Princess Gold Ejan Sangilan and Julie Jay Sumonglay.

Ambulance passenger Flora Mae Toto Antoc and truck passengers Saturnino Tagulod, Sany Boy Rubayan, Izan Encion Luz and three others who have yet to be identified were injured. They were taken to the Sindangan District Hospital for treatment.

Police said the ambulance, which had six passengers, were bound for Dipolog City when the accident occurred in Sitio Guisokan in Barangay Doña Josefa.

Maj. Shellami Chang, Zamboanga peninsula police director, said initial investigation showed the driver of the truck lost control of the wheel when the brake malfunctioned.

The truck veered to the opposite lane and hit the ambulance.

Both vehicles suffered heavy damage.
