Manila opens new park in Escolta

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government opened the new Yuchengco Park in Escolta on Tuesday, offering a promenade view of the Pasig River.

In his speech, outgoing Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said the park offers a scenic view of the historic city, including Jones Bridge and the Manila Central Post Office.

“Manila is old, which is part of its character. That cannot be taken away from Manila, its age and its geography,” Moreno said in Filipino.

Located along Muelle del Banco Nacional street, the plaza spans the streets of Yuchengco, Soda, Tomas Pinpin and Burke.

The plaza has 24 flowering trees, 28 lamp posts, 16 light bollards, 14 plant boxes and eight plant wells, according to the city’s public information office.

Yuchengco Group of Companies chairperson Helen Yuchengco Dee said they are grateful to Moreno for accepting their participation in the city government’s beautification program.

“This landscaped and well-lighted plaza blends perfectly well with the iconic view of the Pasig River and historic landmarks, such as the Manila Post Office and Jones Bridge. It offers a postcard view of the city,” Dee said.

“We hope that our modest contribution will help the city government, especially in its efforts to revive Escolta and Binondo areas,” she added.

Incoming mayor Honey Lacuna thanked Moreno for his political will in cleaning up Manila and promoting its tourism.
