MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has started repairing cracks in the EDSA-Timog flyover in Quezon City and clearing roads near the structure, an MMDA official said yesterday.

Personnel from the MMDA’s Task Force Special Operations towed 16 cars and two motorcycles illegally parked along Samar and Scout Borromeo streets in Barangay South Triangle yesterday morning, TFSO chief Edison Nebrija said.

The MMDA designated the two streets as alternate routes to avoid EDSA, hence the need to clear them of obstructions, he said.

Motorists were caught in heavy traffic on Friday morning after the EDSA-Timog flyover was closed for repair.

The MMDA and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported seeing potholes and cracks in the middle part of the lane going to Makati City.

The MMDA closed the service road underneath the flyover, where pieces of cement were falling from the structure.

Despite the cracks, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes assured motorists the flyover is “structurally sound.”

He added that the DPWH has committed to finish the repairs in the flyover in one week.
