MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday it would strictly enforce the one-strike policy against police commanders who fail to curb illegal gambling operations.

PNP Directorate for Operations chief Maj. Gen. Valeriano de Leon warned police chiefs that they would be relieved from their posts if they are found either tolerating or in cahoots with illegal gambling operators.

“We have to remind police commanders that there is a specific instruction from Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office) chairperson Royina Garma that Peryahan ng Bayan operations are no longer authorized,” Valeriano said in a statement.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año had ordered the PNP and local government units to strictly enforce the ban on Peryahan ng Bayan operations.

De Leon said he would recommend to PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. the relief of police chiefs if they fail to curb illegal gambling operations in their areas of jurisdiction.

“There is a directive from Malacañang to stop illegal gambling. If they fail to do it, then they will be relieved immediately. We will find other police commanders who will replace them,” De Leon said.

He issued the warning after the PNP received reports that Peryahan ng Bayan and other forms of illegal gambling are still operating in Calamba City and other parts of Laguna.

Calabarzon police director Brig. Gen. Antonio Yarra was ordered to probe illegal gambling operators in Laguna.
