MANILA, Philippines — One of the Philippine Navy’s warships, the BRP Antonio Luna, sailed for Hawaii on Wednesday to participate in this year’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercise.

At least 27 naval forces from other countries will join the event.

Naval Public Affairs Office chief Commander Benjo Negranza said the multinational naval exercise led by the United States Navy would be held in Honolulu from June 29 to Aug. 4.

Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Adelius Bordado led the send-off rites for the frigate and its crew, who will refuel in Guam before departing for Hawaii.

Negranza said this is the third time that the Philippines would participate in the RIMPAC.

“We joined this year’s Pacific naval exercise for regional stability and commitment to our allied navies,” Negranza told reporters.

He said joining the RIMPAC is one of the Philippine Navy’s major international defense and security engagement activities this year.
