Chinese drug ring eyed in P544 million shabu haul
MANILA, Philippines — The Chinese-run Golden Triangle drug ring is believed to be behind the 80 kilos of shabu worth P544 million seized in stings in Dasmariñas and General Trias in Cavite on Thursday, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said.
PDEA director general Wilkins Villanueva said the confiscated shabu could have originated from Myanmar.
The Golden Triangle was also tagged in previous large-scale smuggling of illegal drugs in the country.
PDEA said one of those arrested, Dominador Omega Jr., is a leader of a drug ring with links to self-confessed drug trafficker Kerwin Espinosa.
Villanueva said the suspects had been under surveillance for one month.
Philippine National Police (PNP) officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said drug ring members use residential houses in subdivisions in Dasmariñas to avoid detection.
In Central Luzon, regional police director Brig. Gen. Matthew Baccay said illegal drugs valued at around P82 million were confiscated in law enforcement operations from January to June 1.
He said 3,629 suspects were arrested while nearly 10,000 grams of shabu worth P66 million and 132,000 grams of marijuana valued at P16 million were recovered in 2,659 operations.— Ramon Efren Lazaro
