15.3 million get free MRT rides
MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 has serviced 15,381,945 commuters since the MRT-3’s free rides program started on March 28, the rail line reported yesterday.
The figure includes the 351,592 passengers who rode the trains on May 20, the highest headcount since the rail line reopened in June 2020 after public transport was shut down in March of the same year due to the COVID pandemic, the MRT-3 said.
The MRT-3’s free train rides program is set to end on May 30, a month later than originally scheduled.
The rail line said that aside from helping ease the financial burden of commuters amid the rising prices of fuel and basic goods, the program would test the MRT-3’s capacity to carry more than 350,000 passengers.
The MRT-3 would continue deploying four-car train sets during the rush hour, aside from the usual three-car train sets that traverse the rail line.
