MANILA, Philippines — Families displaced by a fire at the Baseco Compound in Manila on Thursday would receive cash assistance from the city government, Mayor Isko Moreno said over the weekend.
Moreno said each family would be given P10,000.
He visited the fire victims on Saturday and called on them to buy materials such as metal sheets and plywood to start rebuilding their homes.
“Magtayo na kayo ng bahay. Bawat isa sa inyo tatanggap ng P10,000. Huwag ninyong gamitin ang pera sa sabong,” Moreno said.
According to Moreno’s successor Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna, the city government would extend financial assistance to 277 families who were left homeless after the fire.
Meanwhile, a fire broke out at a residential area in Manila on Saturday.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said a two-story house in Pandacan was engulfed by flames.
The blaze reached second alarm, prompting the BFP to deploy eight fire trucks and a rescue truck to the scene.
The fire was declared out at past 7 p.m.
No one was reported injured during the incident. Damage to property was placed at P100,000.
