Magnitude-6.1 quake jolts Metro Manila, Batangas

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-6.1 earthquake shook Batangas and the nearby provinces as well as Metro Manila early yesterday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake, which was of tectonic origin, occurred at 5:50 a.m.

The temblor was felt at Intensity 4 in the town of Calatagan, Batangas and in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity 3 was recorded in Pasay, Pasig and Quezon City as well as in Batangas City; Alfonso, Amadeo, Mendez and Tagaytay, all in Cavite; Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro; Malolos, Obando, Plaridel and San Ildefonso, all in Bulacan; Guagua in Pampanga; Gumaca in Quezon, and Olongapo in Zambales.

Intensity 2 was felt in some parts of Abucay, Bataan; Talisay, Batangas; Marilao and Pandi, both in Bulacan; Gapan, Nueva Ecija; Roxas and San Jose, both in Occidental Mindoro; Dolores, Mauban and Mulanay, all in Quezon province; Tanay, Rizal, and Castillejos, Zambales as well as in Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila, Marikina and Muntinlupa.

Intensity 1 was recorded in some parts of Baler, Aurora; Los Baños, Laguna; Lopez, Lucban, Polillo Islands, San Francisco and Tayabas, all in Quezon province, and Iba, Zambales as well as in Pasig and Quezon City.

Phivolcs has yet to receive reports of any damage generated by the earthquake.

Aftershocks are expected in quake-affected areas, state seismologists said.
