DOTr restores LRT-2 elevators, escalators

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has made significant progress in restoring the operation of escalators and elevators at the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2).

The DOTr said 66 of the rail line’s 72 escalators and 36 of 40 elevators are now operational.

“Commuters can expect more convenience in their daily rides as more escalators and elevators have been restored at the LRT-2 stations,” the DOTr said.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade previously called for the repairs of defective LRT-2 escalators and elevators.

Tugade also ordered the LRT-2 management to blacklist erring suppliers.

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), the line’s operator, said the repair of escalators and elevators is in line with efforts to improve the accessibility of the rail service to the riding public, especially the elderly, pregnant women and persons with disabilities.

The 17.69-kilometer rail line has 13 stations from Recto in Manila to Masinag in Antipolo City.

The LRT-2 has an estimated daily ridership of 300,000 people. — Ghio Ong
