Sandoval to poll winners: Let’s work together

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Malabon City Mayor-elect Jeannie Sandoval is calling on other newly elected officials, particularly from rival parties, to work together for their constituents’ welfare.

Vice Mayor Bernard dela Cruz, who won a fresh term, belongs to the party of Sandoval’s rival, outgoing Councilor Jose Lorenzo Oreta.

“We should fulfill our duties as mayor and vice mayor and think about the welfare of our constituents in Malabon,” Sandoval said after her proclamation as the city’s new mayor.

The first woman to be elected mayor of Malabon, Sandoval vowed to prioritize creating housing, health and employment projects.

Her priority programs include the establishment of a Shelter and Housing Office that would oversee the city’s socialized housing projects and the launch of a Blue Benefits Card program to shoulder Malabon residents’ healthcare needs.

She would also push for a moratorium on business taxes, fees and charges, as well as the regularization of city government employees.

Sandoval defeated Oreta, youngest brother of outgoing Mayor Antolin Oreta III, by a slim margin. She received 94,826 or 50.33 percent of total votes while the younger Oreta collected 93,547 or 49.66 percent.
