Proclaimed: Joy Belmonte gets second term as Quezon City mayor

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, alongside her running-mate Gian Sotto, is proclaimed by Commission on Elections officials for a second term.

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has been elected to a second term after beating Rep. Mike Defensor (Anakalusugan party-list), her main rival in the mayoral race. 

Belmonte, who ran under Serbisyo ng Bayan Party, garnered 635,124 votes. Defensor earned 401,070 votes.

Belmonte is the daughter of former House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. and the late newspaper publisher Betty Go-Belmonte.

Her running mate, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, also won his re-election bid with 569,315 votes. He defeated Councilor Winnie Castelo, who received 417,736 votes. 

There are over 1.4 million voters registered in Quezon City, latest data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed. 

The national and local elections were held on May 9.
