MANILA, Philippines — The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has directed telecommunications companies and internet service providers (ISPs) to suspend major network repairs and maintenance works until next week in line with the May 9 elections.
Network repairs and maintenance works have been prohibited from May 4 to 14, based on a memorandum circular issued by the NTC.
The NTC said this would ensure continued digital connectivity of election-related communications during the period.
Emergency repairs, however, are permitted provided that the telcos and ISPs notify the NTC.
“The concerned entities must immediately inform the NTC of the details of the emergency repair,” the agency said.
The NTC requires maintenance personnel of telcos and ISPs, including subcontractors, to use proper company IDs and uniform, as well as company-marked vehicles at all times.
The agency said notices would be issued to the Commission on Elections, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police to prevent unscrupulous persons from causing any interruptions in telecommunication services.
The NTC said it requested the Department of Public Works and Highways to suspend diggings that may cause fiber cuts during the elections.
