South Korean woman faces deportation
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is set to deport a South Korean woman for illegally working in Las Piñas City.
Lee Mikyong, 52, allegedly worked at a food mart along Alabang Zapote Road without the necessary permit and travel documents, according to BI intelligence division chief Fortunato Manahan Jr.
“Upon verification, it was confirmed that her visa had lapsed so she is considered an undocumented foreigner. She also failed to present a working permit,” Manahan said.
BI agents arrested Lee based on a mission order issued by Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente.
Morente advised foreign workers to comply with the country’s immigration laws or they would be arrested.
“As the Philippines opens its borders, more foreigners are expected to come in,” he said. “Legalize your stay here or face arrest, deportation and blacklisting.”
Lee was detained at the BI jail at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig pending her deportation.
