Amoranto Sports Complex undergoes renovation

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government will soon finish the renovation and construction of new facilities at the Amoranto Sports Complex, Mayor Joy Belmonte said yesterday.

Belmonte said the master plan for the renovation of the decades-old complex is part of the local government’s commitment to revitalize sports and harness the potential of the city’s athletes.

“The Amoranto Sports Complex should be a space where our home-grown athletes can train and improve their skills,” she said.

“With this master plan, we are renovating not just training facilities but also spaces where the city can host competitions and other public gatherings for QCitizens and guests,” Belmonte added.

In addition to the renovation of existing facilities, the master plan also covers the construction of new sports facilities such as the Amoranto Arena, which will have a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball competitions and other big events.

An Olympic-size swimming pool with 10 lanes and an elevated pool deck are being constructed as well as a tennis court area in the two-story Amoranto indoor sports facility.

A five-story deck parking building is also being built to accommodate more than 300 cars, motorcycles and bikes, with a special area designated for buses.

Construction of other facilities is expected to commence soon, the city government said.

City hall said it is also planning to improve the existing grandstand and the track and field oval, with ongoing studies for the possible renovation of the existing velodrome.

Constructed in 1960 on a 5.8-hectare land in Barangay Paligsahan, the Amoranto Sports Complex is composed of a grandstand with main stadium, an eight-lane track and field oval, bleachers and a gymnasium.
