PETA marks Earth Day, asks public to go vegan
MANILA, Philippines — Wearing dinosaur costumes, members of the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a demonstration ahead of Earth Day celebration today.
PETA members gathered at the ASEAN Garden along Roxas Boulevard in Manila at noon yesterday. They urged the public to go vegan.
“We are in a pandemic caused by eating animals. We’re heading for a climate catastrophe if we don’t change our eating habits,” said PETA senior vice president Jason Baker.
The group said nearly 200 animals would be spared each year for every person who refrains from eating animals.
“It is one of the easiest and most effective actions an individual can take to reduce carbon footprint,” PETA said.
The group said that based on the United Nations report, animal agriculture is responsible for nearly a fifth of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.
“Shifting toward vegan is necessary if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change, which is responsible for rising sea levels and devastating typhoons,” PETA said.
