MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said yesterday he is open to a possible extension of his tour of duty beyond his retirement on May 8.

While he is ready to retire and become a civilian, Carlos said he has no problem if his superiors would order him to stay on the job as PNP chief.

Carlos will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 a day before the general elections on May 9.

“Ang plano ko bumoto sa May 9 bilang private citizen. But if my term as PNP chief will be extended, I will follow my superiors,” he said at a press briefing.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said President Duterte has the option to extend the term of Carlos to create a smooth transition period between the current and next administration.

Año denied reports that PNP deputy chief for administration Rhodel Sermonia has been designated as officer-in-charge of the police force ahead of Carlos’ retirement.
