NBI nabs fake staff of BBM spokesman

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a woman who posed as a staff member of lawyer Vic Rodriguez, spokesman for presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Caseilyn de la Cruz Cardenas, 31, was nabbed at her house in Bocuae, Bulacan on Monday. She allegedly solicited money for the victims of Typhoon Agaton, according to NBI special action unit head Jerome Bomediano.

Rodriguez lauded the NBI for the suspect’s arrest.

“Let this serve as a warning to others who are part of this group that we will take all legal means to stop their criminal activities and make them accountable for their deplorable deeds,” Rodriguez said.

He denied soliciting funds for the campaign of Marcos as well as for any disaster relief operations.

The suspect was apprehended based on a complaint filed by Rodriguez after receiving information that some individuals were using his name in a Facebook account to illegally solicit money from wealthy businessmen.

The NBI said the suspect and her cohorts would call or send a message to their potential victims before asking for donations for relief operations of the Marcos camp for the victims of Typhoon Agaton.

Rodriguez said Cardenas’ group allegedly demanded P120,000 as a shipping fee for the deliveries of tons of rice.  She reportedly asked donors to send the money to a bank account under the name Jennylyn Complido.

Cardenas denied the accusation against her and claimed that an inmate of the New Bilibid Prison she identified as “Kiko” instructed her to open a bank account.

She admitted that prior to her arrest, P50,000 had been deposited to her bank account, which she sent to Kiko through money transfer service.

Cardenas was detained at the NBI headquarters on charges of attempted estafa and for violating Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
