BOC earns P81 million from sale of overstaying shipments
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has raised nearly P81 million from the sale of overstaying shipments as part of efforts to generate additional revenues for the government and prevent port and yard congestion.
In a report last week, the BOC said its Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group (AOCG) managed to collect P80.76 million by disposing of 304 overstaying containers in the first quarter of 2022 through public auction, condemnation or donation.
The AOCG sold 96 containers of assorted items ranging from rice to galvanized steel, donated 38 containers of twine and yarn items to select agencies, and condemned 170 cargoes of rotten foodstuff, used clothes, used oil and used furniture, among others.
Under BOC rules, cargoes that consignees fail to withdraw within 30 days from the payment of duties and taxes will be considered abandoned.
