MANILA, Philippines — A memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the rehabilitation of mangroves that were damaged by Typhoon Odette in Siargao, Surigao del Norte has been signed between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc. (JVOFI).
During the signing of the MOA on March 15, DENR acting Secretary Jim Sampulna and JVOFI president Reinaldo Bautista Jr. agreed to conduct a three-year post-disaster restoration and rehabilitation of the 143 hectares of mangrove forests in Siargao Island’s municipalities.
Under the MOA, the JVOFI will provide P10 million to cover the cost of restoration and rehabilitation of storm-damaged mangroves, particularly in the towns of Del Carmen, Dapa, General Luna, San Benito and Socorro.
The DENR-Caraga will coordinate with the provincial and community environment officers for the determination of the mode of planting and maintenance.
