4 slain in Batangas ‘shootout’

BATANGAS, Philippines — A police officer and three suspected contract killers were killed in an alleged encounter in Calatagan town in this province on Saturday night.

The incident, which occurred at around 10 p.m. near the Calatagan Cockpit Arena, also left two civilians wounded.

Pat. Gregorio Panganiban Jr. died at the scene from a gunshot to the chest, probers said.

The other fatalities were identified as Joel Herjas, Rolly Herjas and Gabriel Bahia.

Civilians Joselito Carlum and Mayumi Dunaway were taken to the Metro Balayan Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds. Both are in stable condition.

Reports said that personnel of the Calatagan police were responding to information that armed men were seen roaming around the arena.

Investigation showed the men were allegedly planning to assassinate Michael Comaya, councilor of the nearby town of Lian and administrator of the arena.

Police said the suspects reportedly shot the approaching officers, triggering a firefight that resulted in the death of Panganiban and the three suspects.

Investigation is ongoing, according to Brig. Gen Antonio Yarra, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) police director. – Ed Amoroso, Neil Jayson Servallos
