MRT-3 eyes longer train sets

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) may soon deploy longer train sets to carry more passengers per trip after it held a test run of a four-car train set for the first time on Wednesday.

The rail line’s technical team, along with maintenance provider Sumitomo-MHI-TESP, conducted a dynamic testing of the four-car train, the management said in a statement yesterday.

The test assessed if the four-car configuration could pass requirements for safety, comfort and stability against derailment, it added.

The MRT-3 said that while rail platforms were designed to carry four-car train sets, the “pocket track, where trains park off the main line, has been found to have insufficient length to accommodate the safe operation of trains in four-car configuration.”

The MRT-3 also received a recommendation to “redesign the track at the north side of the main line… to allow for the safe operation of four-car train sets.”
