Bacolod churches told to set up own PPCRV

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Diocese of Bacolod has ordered all churches under its jurisdiction to set up their own Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and organize circles of discernment in communities.

In a pastoral letter on Lent and elections released yesterday, Bishop Patricio Buzon stressed the importance of the PPCRV and the circles of discernment in the upcoming May 9 elections.

“The importance of the PPCRV can never be over-emphasized, since it will greatly impact the life of the whole nation for better or for worse,” Buzon said.

Filipinos need renewal as a people, both as voters and candidates, Buzon said, noting the need to move from “old politics that is toxic to a new kind of politics that is life giving.”

“As a people, we need to put to death traditional politics characterized by patronage, vote-buying, corruption, dynasty, deception and fake news… and bring to birth a principled politics grounded on truth, goodness, justice and peace,” he said.

Buzon said the Catholic Church as a mother embraces all her children regardless of political color or social standing.

He said the Church as a teacher fulfills her mission to proclaim the gospel of truth and love.

“While being non-partisan, the Church cannot be neutral when the Gospel values are violated or compromised,” Buzon said.

“The Church fulfills her prophetic role through her leaders, priests and consecrated persons as well as provides spiritual and moral guidance in the exercise of principled politics,” he added.

The Diocese of Bacolod committed to help ensure honest, fair and peaceful elections through the PPCRV.
