Iloilo mayoral bet arrested for cyber libel

Jennifer Rendon - The Philippine Star

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A radio broadcaster running for mayor in this city was arrested yesterday in connection with the cyber libel charges filed against him before a court in Guimaras.

Salvador Capulot Jr., 49, a resident of Barangay Balabago in Jaro district, had just parked his vehicle along B. Aquino Avenue in Mandurriao when he was accosted by members of the city police.

Capt. Eduardo Siacon Jr., Jaro district police chief, said Capulot, who was on his way to a radio station for his program, did not resist arrest.

Police said the arrest was based on a warrant for six counts of violation of Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act issued by Guimaras Regional Trial Court Branch 6 Judge Rosario Abigail Magay Dris-Villanueva on Feb. 15.

Bail was set at P15,000.

Siacon said they are not privy to the details of the charges, which were filed by former Guimaras representative and candidate for governor JC Rahman Nava.

Nava is running under the National Unity Party, which is also being carried by Capulot’s opponent Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas.
