Reds kill 2 civilians in Negros Oriental
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A former barangay kagawad and his son were shot dead by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Malangsa in Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental on Wednesday.
The 62nd Infantry Battalion identified the victims as Lucio Perater, 60, and his son, Antonio.
Perater’s wife Beatriz is the incumbent barangay captain.
“This barbaric act perpetuated by members of the NPA is despicable and unacceptable,” Vallehermoso Mayor Marianne Gustilo, chairperson of the Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, said.
The NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command issued a statement claiming responsibility for the killing.
The rebel group claimed Perater and his son were informants of the Philippine Army.
In Misamis Oriental, an NPA rebel was killed in an encounter with government troopers in Barangay Lawaan in Gingoog City on Thursday.
First Lt. Vincent Mark Baddul, 58th Infantry Battalion civil military operations officer, said two M16 rifles, magazines, ammunition and personal belongings were recovered at the scene. – Michael Punongbayan
