DOJ orders NBI to probe scam victimizing teachers

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice on Wednesday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the alleged phishing scam that victimized teachers with LandBank accounts.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra directed NBI officer-in-charge Eric Distor to submit a report within 30 days.

Guevarra instructed the NBI to file charges against those involved in the scam if evidence warrants.

The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) said over P1 million was stolen from the LandBank accounts of teachers.

Benjo Basas, who heads the TDC, said 20 of the 50 complaints they received had been submitted to the Department of Education.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, LandBank denied that its system was hacked, adding that the bank documents of its clients are secured.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology will conduct its own probe into the online scam, DICT acting Secretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic said. – Rainier Allan Ronda, Romina Cabrera
