Manila sets liquor ban for Sto. Niño feast
MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Manila has ordered a ban on alcoholic beverages during the Feast of the Sto. Niño today.
The ban would cover the sale and consumption of liquor, according to an executive order signed by Mayor Isko Moreno on Thursday.
Moreno said the city government would not hesitate to close down stores that would insist on selling alcohol.
The executive order also prohibited processions, street parties, stage shows, parades, street games and other activities that promote mass gatherings as the city continues to experience a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Moreno also appealed to devotees of the Sto. Niño or the Infant Jesus, who serves as patron saint of the districts of Tondo and Pandacan, to stay indoors, join online masses offered by their respective parishes and pray for the safety of their families and for the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of yesterday, Manila had a total of 99,548 confirmed COVID-19 patients with 94,121 recoveries, 1,792 deaths and 3,635 active cases.
