Negros livestock industry reeling from Odette
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Damage to livestock in Negros Occidental due to Super Typhoon Odette has reached P742 million, the office of the provincial veterinarian said yesterday.
Renante Decena, chief veterinarian, said that of the estimated cost of damage in 29 local government units, P426.6 million or 57.5 percent included death of livestock and poultry.
Damage to structure such as livestock housing and facilities amounted to P315.7 million or equivalent to 42.5 percent of the total amount, Decena said in a report submitted to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson.
Decena said P192 million worth of broilers composed of around 1.29 million heads were killed.
The figure was followed by P70 million worth of swine and more than P61 million each of layers and game fowl.
More than 2,625 backyard raisers of different livestock and 132 commercial raisers in the fourth, fifth and sixth districts of the province were displaced by Odette.
