MANILA, Philippines — The number of active COVID-19 cases in Navotas rose to 15 from less than 10 last week.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco said this showed that COVID-19 remains unpredictable, especially with social gatherings this Christmas season.

“This is what we’ve been saying, that infection is faster than recovery,” Tiangco said in Filipino.

He appealed to his constituents to comply with health protocols even while celebrating the Yuletide season.

“Let us celebrate safely to prevent sickness among our family members and loved ones,” Tiangco said.

Navotas tallied 15 active COVID-19 cases on Christmas Day, up from nine cases on Dec. 24.

Over 17,000 people in the city have recovered from the disease.

In Muntinlupa, there were no new COVID-19 cases recorded on Dec. 24.
