Cop killed in knife attack; suspect shot dead

ESPERANZA, Sultan Kudarat, Philippines — A man believed to be drunk went amuck and killed a policeman in a knife attack at the police station in this town on Monday night.

S/Sgt. Victor Araño, who was attacked in the mess room of the police station, died on the way to a hospital.

The suspect, Jessy Ferrer, then barged into a nearby house and held hostage two children. The hostages were eventually set free through the intercession of barangay officials and policemen.

Police said Ferrer was shot dead when he tried to grab the gun of one of the arresting policemen while he was being handcuffed.
