BFP urges public: Shun firecrackers
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) yesterday renewed its appeal to the public not to use firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Day.
BFP chief Director Louie Puracan made the appeal as they have recorded an increase in the number of fire incidents.
“We can still celebrate Christmas and be safe even without firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” Puracan said in his speech at the virtual launching of Oplan “Paalala Iwas Paputok” 2021.
The BFP has tallied 7,233 fire incidents so far this year. The figure is 10.93 percent higher compared to 6,520 fires in 2020.
Parucan urged those who want to use firecrackers and pyrotechnics to instead use alternative devices such as tin cans and horns.
He pointed out that improper use of fireworks could lead to injuries and deaths.
Citing records, Puracan said 335 people, including four BFP personnel, have died in fire incidents.
“I encourage everyone to exercise caution on the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” he said.
