MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila mayors will allow bazaars and tiangge or flea markets to operate during the Christmas season provided that traders and vendors are fully vaccinated.

According to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos, the mayors decided to make vaccination a requirement to ensure the health of the public.

Abalos said 89 percent of Metro Manila’s adult population have been fully vaccinated.

“But the vaccination percentage in areas outside Metro Manila is not that high,” Abalos said.

“Hindi naman namin alam kung saang lugar galing itong mga traders,” he added.

Meanwhile, Abalos inspected yesterday the removal of silt in the Parañaque River where shanties have been built.

Abalos said the project is part of the MMDA’s flood control measures in the area.

He said it would take about three to four months to remove the pile of garbage in the river, which is estimated to have accumulated to 26,000 cubic meters.
