‘Beware of scammers who drop pols’ names’
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday warned the public against scammers who drop politicians’ names to collect money from unsuspecting victims.
“I want to remind the public to be careful and not trust people using the names of politicians to ask for favors or money,” PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said.
Eleazar issued the warning following the arrest of suspects who identified themselves as staff of presidential candidate Sen. Manny Pacquiao in Camarin, Caloocan on Friday.
Police said the suspects sold time records for P30 each to residents, whom they promised would receive cash from Pacquio for cleaning their community.
The suspects said they were ordered to recruit cleaners who would be paid P7,500 each.
Pacquiao’s camp denied any involvement in the scheme and cautioned the public against scammers.
Eleazar said aside from Pacquiao, the suspects also used the names of other politicians in their scam.
