MRT train catches fire; 8 hurt

MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) resumed operations yesterday after a fire razed a carriage between the Buendia and Guadalupe stations in Makati on Saturday night.

Eight passengers suffered bruises after they jumped off the northbound train that went up in flames at past 9 p.m., the MRT-3 management said in a statement.

The blaze was contained after first alarm before 10 p.m., according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Damage to property was placed at P100,000.

The MRT-3 maintenance provider, Sumitomo Corp., apologized to the passengers for the incident and vowed to look into the cause of the fire.

The railway system resumed full operations, with 17 trains running yesterday.
