Trucks barred from Nagtahan flyover as repairs start

MANILA, Philippines — Trucks would not be allowed to pass through the Nagtahan flyover in Manila for seven months to make way for the flyover’s rehabilitation and repair, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

In an advisory, the MMDA said the flyover was closed to trucks starting on Friday.

Large cracks were found on the bridge’s abutment wall and railing, according to the MMDA. Steel enclosures of retrofitting on several piers were found to be either loose or rusting.

Only one lane on the flyover would be open and only light vehicles would be allowed to pass through the flyover and the Nagtahan service road.

The construction would be done in segments, the MMDA said. The first two segments are the northbound lane from R. Magsaysay to G. Tuazon. It is expected to be finished within two months.

The third segment is the southbound lane from G. Tuazon to R. Magsaysay, eyed for completion within one and a half months.

Segments four and five are the northbound lane from EARIST to R. Magsaysay, for completion within two months.

Segment six is the southbound lane from R. Magsaysay to EARIST.

“Vehicles going north are advised to take Osmeña Highway, right to Quirino Avenue, left to Quirino Avenue Extension, left to UN Avenue, right to Romualdez street, left to Ayala Boulevard and Roxas Boulevard to destination,” the advisory read.

“Meanwhile, vehicles going south may take A. Bonifacio Avenue, right to C3, R10 to their destination,” it added.

The repairs are expected to be finished in April next year.
