CEBU, Philippines — A lawyer was shot dead in Barangay Guadalupe in Cebu City yesterday.

Maj. Jonathan dela Cerna, Guadalupe police station chief, identified the fatality as Rex Fernandez, 64.

Initial investigation showed the assailant crossed the street and opened fire when Fernandez’s car was about to turn toward the highway.

The driver of the victim was wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment while another passenger was unharmed.

The gunman escaped on a waiting motorcycle.

Dela Cerna said the motive for the killing could be work-related.

Fernandez went on a hunger strike last week in protest against the management of a condominium in Mandaue City after electricity and water in his unit was cut.

Fernandez was among those who staged a protest against the Anti-Terror Law before it was signed last year.

Dela Cerna said a special investigation task group would be created to look into the killing. – /The Freeman
