MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways is rushing the widening of Lawton Avenue in Taguig, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said yesterday.

Villar expressed optimism that the 350-linear-meter widened segment, covering Bayani Road to the Phippine Navy, will be opened to motorists by September.

He said the project would increase the thoroughfare’s capacity to accommodate additional volume of vehicles and facilitate faster mobilization of goods.

Villar inspected works on the Fort Bonifacio Nichols Field Road-Lawton Avenue widening project yesterday.

The DPWH targets to finish the entire 3.1-kilometer road widening project before the end of the year.

The DPWH will convert the existing four-lane highway into a six-lane thoroughfare.

The project is composed of three phases as part of the government’s program to decongest EDSA.

Villar said traffic situation along EDSA, South Superhighway and C-5 Road would be eased once the project is completed. Travel time from BGC in Taguig to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport will be reduced to only 15 minutes.

It will also complement the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road project, which will improve access to and from the cities of Taguig, Pasig, Makati and Mandaluyong.
