PNP allows DOJ to probe EJKs
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has partnered with the Depatrment of Justice (DOJ) to look into alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) under the government’s war on drugs.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said he would be signing an agreement with Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra for closer
cooperation in the investigation.
“Our agencies both committed to address this long-time concern on EJKs. We see the agreement as a step toward further strengthening our ties,” Eleazar said in a statement.
The PNP has allowed the DOJ to scrutinize the records of at least 61 police operations, which resulted in the deaths of drug suspects.
Eleazar said ridding the PNP of scalawags is one of his priorities when he assumed leadership of the police organization.
He assured Guevarra of the PNP’s full cooperation as he vowed to kick out rogue police officers.
“Our willingness to open some of our records to the DOJ is a big development in terms of our relations,” Eleazar said.
