Bulusan sustains restiveness
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — The Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon continues to act up as state seismologists have detected at least five volcanic earthquakes per day in the past four days until yesterday.
On May 12, over 150 quakes were recorded around the volcano, prompting authorities to raise the alert status from normal to abnormal.
“Although the earthquakes simmered down from 166 on May 12 to five or six only in the past days until yesterday, its overall condition remains abnormal,” Bobby Tuprio, Bulusan’s watcher at the Cabid-An monitoring station in Sorsogon City, told The STAR yesterday.
Aside from the quakes, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology detected an inflation or bulging of the surface and upper slopes of the volcano.
“Entry within the four-kilometer- radius permanent danger zone around the volcano is prohibited,” Tuprio said.
Residents have been told to prepare for evacuation should the volcano’s condition worsen.
